Hello and welcome to the Own Your Health podcast, I'm Cyndi Lynne, and I can't wait to help you step into your health power. This is the third in my little series this December on Catch 22 Health. And in this series, I'm talking about practices that we very often look to on our healing and health journey to make us better, that in fact can make us worse.
[00:28.1]
These are the kind of practices that we look to for health but have to be at a certain level of health to engage in these practices safely. So this comes up in my practice when people come to me after injury or after trying some new form of exercise or trying some program that they've read about or subscribed to, and it's not suitable for where they are at this current moment in their health.
[00:57.9]
And one of the absolute foundations of my practice is to meet clients where they are. So what does this actually look like? What are these people engaging in that I say isn't a match for their health?
[01:15.2]
CrossFit is one of the big ones that's been popular for the last few years. I think it's dying down. At least the publicity around it is dying down a little bit. It's one of these exercises, exercises that covers your whole body. It takes stability, it takes strength, it takes good cardiovascular level of fitness.
[01:36.2]
And in my humble opinion, although it might be controversial, there is no such thing as truly beginning level crossfit. All right. The same is true with running. Running is often something that people will say, oh, anybody can do it.
[01:51.7]
You just need a pair of shoes. You can do it anywhere. It takes very little equipment, it's very inexpensive to do. Just go out and start running. And that really just isn't suitable for someone at the very beginning part of their journey. So at the same time that I know, it's critical for me to meet clients right where they are in that moment in their body.
[02:13.8]
It's important as you own your health, that you do the same. Where is my body now? So often I see people saying, you know, I did this, I did that. I ran for years and years and I loved it.
[02:32.5]
I worked out here, I lifted weights there. And even if it was just a couple of years ago or if it was just one injury ago, that may not be where your body, where your health is ready to start again.
[02:50.6]
I really encourage folks to take stock of where they are and what they're able to do safely. Now, this doesn't necessarily mean what they're able to do easily or without any effort, because exercise is one of those things that's going to take effort.
[03:05.9]
It's going to push you a little. You're going to have to work to expand what you're able to do. It's the starting point that I'm most interested in and the starting point that you should be most interested in if you really want to own your health, as opposed to damaging it or pushing it beyond its capabilities for this moment in this day.
[03:33.2]
We talk about it more often in yoga, that every day you come to your mat, you come with that day's body. That means also that you come with that day's level of hydration and nutrition and sleep and stress level.
[03:50.4]
And there's going to be days that you perform, I don't know if that's the best yoga term, at a much higher level than others, depending on all of those things that contribute to what your body is today. And that's true for any form of exercise we do, including simply walking.
[04:10.7]
So the catch 22 is that most of us want to do exercises that are fun, new, impactful, going to make a difference. The catch 22 part is that very often we're not at that point, we're not ready to start those exercises.
[04:27.0]
So this is particularly timely as we head into the new calendar year, as people make plans, promises to themselves, New Year's resolutions that often include exercise.
[04:43.0]
If this is the time, if this is the year where you're really going to tap in to your physical health through exercise, I encourage you to give my Jumpstart program a start for you. Three simple sessions we'll tackle together any one health issue, including exercise, to find where you are to start your healing journey through movement.
[05:12.4]
If that sounds exciting to you, if it sounds a little bit scary, go ahead and reach out. There's a link in the notes below. And until then, I'll see you next week and go out and own it.
